Free TOEFL® iBT Tips

On this page you will some receive free tips. Unfortunately one page is not enough to give you all the material you need to pass.

1. Where do you begin to prepare? The first priority is that you need to learn how to type, and type well. This means at a rapid rate (30 words per minute or more) and with accuracy. Why? The TOEFL® iBT is completely Internet based and typing is a mandatory skill.

2. Learn to take accurate and succinct notes. Succinct means short and to the point. You are allowed to take notes and it is highly recommended that you do so.

3. Listening is a skill that must be developed. You must learn to listen well, understand what is being said, and become intuitive of what is inferred.

4. Understand different “accents” of English. Actually it is not an “accent”, but different pronunciations of the same words. You need to understand the correct pronunciations of words whether they are spoken by Americans, Canadians, Britons, or Australians.

5. The main points to touch on when writing are: Who, What, Why, When, Where and How. You will need to incorporate all or most (depending on your subject) of those elements.

6. If you are prone to use idioms while speaking make sure you get them right. There is nothing worse than trying to use idioms to demonstrate a skill in speaking English and then making a mistake, or making a mis-statement.

7. Some English words are easily confused with others. Make sure you use simplified language and do not try to over-reach with words you are uncomfortable with or that you are not familiar with.

8. You will need to have a very clear voice, with good pronunciations and good grammar for the six interactive speaking questions you will be presented. Learn to speak in a measured manner, with each word pronounced separately and correctly.

9. It is necessary that you start to read on a regular basis. It is our recommendation that you read well-written novels and not English-language newspapers from your own country. Why? In your native land you and the writers from your newspapers learned English in the same way. The unique grammatical errors of your country are made by those writers when composing their newspaper stories. Reading well-written, and well-edited, novels will expose you to the type of reading that will help you pass.
